In Mazatlan, you can enjoy lovely beaches and a laid-back attitude at very affordable prices. Less frenetic than other Mexican resort areas, Mazatlan is a great spot for long-stay snowbirds, or just about anyone looking for good value.
The golden sand beaches are the main draw, particularly at uncrowded Isla de la Piedra, just south of town. Sport fishing is great value, surfing is available right in town at Los Pinos beach and a feast of fresh lobster and shrimp is always available for lunch or dinner. Be sure to explore the charming Old Town too and climb up to El Faro, the lighthouse with stunning views in every direction.
The Zona Dorada is the older hotel area but the newer 4- and 5- star resorts are further out near the marina. Since the beaches are good almost everywhere, choose a hotel that has the right amenities and fits your budget. Unlike most sun destinations, many hotels are available both on a "no-meals" and "all-inclusive" basis.
