Soak up the sun on the long stretches of excellent beaches along the north coast of Cuba. The resort area of Guardalavaca, about an hour from Holguin, is relatively undeveloped and has plenty of room for you to relax under swaying palms and play in the blue-green ocean.
The beaches are the prime draw, so go beyond the resort zone and explore Playas Esmeralda or Pesquero. With so few people around you'll feel like you have your very own private beach. The reefs just off the coast are also worth a visit thanks to exceptionally clear water and an abundance of fish and sponges. If you need a break from the beach, bird watch in Bahia de Naranjo nature park or spend a day in Holguin.
Guardalavaca has older, moderate resorts for travellers on a budget as well as newer, flashier properties for those looking for affordable luxury. Since you'll be spending most of your time at your resort, make sure you choose one that has the right amenities for you.
